Bill Salmond & family farmed South Woodend Farm near Allandale.
Bill and his wife Jessie had four children, Betsy, Jean, Billy and Harry.
At first they rented the property then purchased it and the property across the road The Thorn from the owner Adam Scott.
The farm had dairy cows and wheat, turnips, potatoes, etc. In the 1930-1940 Bill sold milk round the local houses from large churns on a horse-drawn cart.
He also had the contract for removing household refuse from the houses at Woodend. Betsy worked with her father on the farm and the other members had other jobs locally.
The farm employed local people when required for harvesting the potatoes and turnips plus helping to harvest wheat, corn, etc.
They also stabled the horses used by foresters working in the nearby forests.
Bill was a keen bowler and was the first non-employee of Steins to become a member of the bowling club.
The farm is now run by Jean & her husband, Willie Dunsmore and their family. Jean & Willie live in the Thorn and their family have a new house in the farm.
The other members of Bill's family all live locally.
